Background

International Youth Day is celebrated annually on August 12th. It is meant as an opportunity for governments and other professionals to draw attention to youth issues worldwide. During International Youth Day, concerts, workshops, cultural events, and meetings involving national and local government officials and youth organisations take place around the world.

Among the focal areas for youth development and protection with this UN initiative include education, employment, the environment, delinquency, girls and young women, HIV/AIDS and inter-generational relations. These were officially decided upon in 1995, the tenth anniversary of the International Year of the Youth.
