Abortion and Termination mean exactly the same thing. It is when someone chooses to end a pregnancy.
In the UK under the 1967 Abortion Act, abortion is legal up to 23 weeks and 6 days gestation, with the consent of 2 doctors.
Who can have an abortion?
Anyone in England, Scotland or Wales can get an abortion. Abortions are usually available free of charge on the NHS. Even if you are under 16 you can choose to have an abortion and your details will be kept confidential, this means that only those you choose to tell will know about the abortion.
Having an abortion will not affect your chances of becoming pregnant again and having normal pregnancies in the future.
Who would I have to tell if I wanted an abortion?
The only people you would have to tell would be the clinic providing the abortion. It might help to talk to a partner, family member, carer or friend but you don’t have to. They do not have a say in your final decision.
What happens if I choose to have an abortion?
You can come into any of our clinics and talk to one of our nurses or doctors to discuss your options and they can help you book an appointment for an abortion if this is what you decide. A GP can also refer you for an abortion.
