Puberty is the time when you start to change from being a child into being an adult. Hormones (chemicals produced by your brain) cause your body to change and grow. They may also affect the way you think and feel about things.

The ovaries and testicles produce two sex hormones responsible for changes that occur during puberty.

In boys, testosterone is produced in the testicles. Testosterone is responsible for the growth of your penis, your pubic hair and the lowering of your voice.

Oestrogen and Progestogen are the main sex hormone in girls and are responsible for the many changes that occur during puberty.

Boys and girls all over the world go through puberty, it doesn’t matter where you live, or what religion you are, Puberty is different for everybody it does not happen overnight, and many changes are gradual.

Remember, you are unique, so is your body, and it will develop at its own pace-Puberty is not a race.

Puberty may begin for some people at 8 or 9 years old, others not until 12 or 13 years old, and it may carry on until someone is about 20 years old.
